The device currently under development at CryMed Technologies is a patented catheter that enables a physician to regulate, transport, and spray liquid nitrogen under low pressure via the accessory channel of a standard or therapeutic GI endoscope. The planned application for the device is the cryoablation of epithelial cells in patients with Barrett's Esophagus, a fairly common ailment oft sited as the precursor to esophageal cancer. There is currently no known cure for Barrett's Esophagus, although many competing therapeutic technologies do exist. In a broader sense, the device can be used for the low pressure, spray-delivery of liquid nitrogen to the interior lining of the upper and lower GI for the purpose of cryoablating many tissue lesions.
Electrosonics Medical Inc. was formed in April 2007 after the acquisition of certain assets of BIOMEC Inc. by New York based Greatbatch Ltd. ElectroSonics is focused on the commercialization of two proprietary products specifically excluded from the Greatbatch acquisition. The technologies are Ear Effusion Detection and Characterization System and Pneumothorax Detection System.
